University of Northampton graduates to world leader in research
The best research carried out by the University of Northampton has been officially recognised as some of the best in the world following results from the UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008.
The RAE is carried out jointly between the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and other education funding and employment bodies to produce an accurate profile of leading university research standards and capabilities.
This year 163 universities submitted various aspects of their research activity for scrutiny. Of the nine research submissions put forward by the University of Northampton four were rewarded with the highest possible rating of four stars, demonstrating 'quality that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour'. These covered work and expertise in Business and Management; Health; Education and History.
The five other research submissions were further recognised as being of international excellence in the fields of: Leather and Materials; English; Drama, Dance and Performing Arts; Art and Design, and Asian Studies.
Dr Frank Burdett, Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Northampton, commented: "This is the best evidence possible of the high quality and standards of research being carried out on a daily basis at the University of Northampton. Ever since we received 'Research Degree Awarding Powers' in 2005 the University has been preparing itself for RAE 2008, the fourth such exercise since 1992.
"The University has doubled its research and knowledge transfer income to just under £10 million over the last five years. These latest peer-reviewed results further showcase our ability to work at the highest levels with business partners across the private and public sectors in the provision of top level research, knowledge transfer and consultancy solutions."
